Gavin Baden was born on October 7, 1979 to Eld. Herbert and Sena Baden. Gavin's father is a Pentecostal pastor and his mother is a nationally known gospel singer and choir director. Gavin was in church the moment he was born. Gavin had a strict upbringing. He credits his upbringing with making him the man he is today. Being a preacher's son kept him out of a lot of trouble. Gavin began playing basketball at the age of 12 in the Miller City Little League. He had trouble in the beginning with dribbling and passing the ball. After some hard work, Gavin's skills began to get better. Gavin accepted Christ as his personal Savior at an early age. He attended Davis Christian Academy in Miller. Gavin's father believed that basketball was just a past time of Gavin's. When Gavin choose to pursue a basketball career instead of a career in ministry, his father was somewhat hurt. Gavin began to fast and pray, with time; Gavin's father became his biggest fan and supporter. Gavin attended Jackson Lee University in Highland Hills. Gavin was having a stellar career. One fateful night in Scotchburg almost changed that. Gavin and a friend were attending a musical in Scotchburg. They were driving home after the service. They were stopped by the police. The police were looking for two young men who had robbed a store. Gavin and his friend fit the description of the two young men. Gavin and his friend were arrested and taken to the police station. Word leaked out that the star small forward of Jackson Lee University had been arrested for robbery. The police station was swamped with reporters. The word was out. This wholesome, Bible carrying, Jesus talking preacher's son, Gavin Baden, was a criminal. Gavin called his father. His father quickly came to see about his son. Gavin and his friend were in jail for two days. The two young men who had actually committed the crime were finally caught. The damage was already done; at least that's what most folk thought. When Gavin was asked about the situation, he was quoted as saying, Gavin was told by the athletic department of Jackson Lee University that he could no longer play basketball for the college. His scholarship was also taken away from him. He was allowed to continue his education at the college. Gavin and his friend began to fast and pray along with his church family. Several students and basketball players on the campus organized a protest. The entire basketball team joined the protest and refused to play any games without Gavin. This protest caused the school to forfeit three games and the campus came to a complete stop. The university made every news broadcast in the state of Maddocha. After three days, the president of the college held a hearing. Gavin was allowed to rejoin the team. He was given an even larger scholarship by an area businessman. Gavin's coach did not want to start Gavin though. The back-up small forward that was suppose to start the game the night of Gavin's return refused to take the court. This delayed the game for 20 minutes. Gavin tried to talk the small forward into playing the game, but the small forward continued to refuse. The coach allowed Gavin to start the game. Gavin continued to be the starting small forward for the Jackson Lee University basketball team until he graduated. Every game from then on was a sell out. Gavin was chosen number 4 by the Maddocha City Wolves in the 1999 Maddocha Basketball League draft. |
